ESMF Impacts

ESMF is changing the nature and scale of interagency collaborations

ESMF reduces technical barriers to sharing codes, and encourages regular interagency dialogue through its processes and management. It has fostered an unprecedented level of interaction among modelers from NASA, DoD, NOAA, other agencies and centers, and universities. These collaborations are transcending traditional geoscience domains and merge hydrology, space weather, climate, and weather prediction projects.

ESMF is changing how models are structured and developed

ESMF organizes models into collections of components with standardized interfaces, arranged in hierarchical trees. Modelers can utilize ESMF toolkits for common tasks, and can draw from a pool of modeling components already in the community. The result is increased code-sharing and collaboration across organizations, faster knowledge transfer and technical adaptation, and cost savings through code reuse.

ESMF is changing how projects are managed

The ESMF governance model has clear, formal processes for multi-agency management and customer-driven decision making. Customers set development priorities and schedules through participation in quarterly meetings. The broader community can participate in open design reviews and open code reviews, and browse and download from the open source code repository.
